Balancing Business & Motherhood: Life as a Mum to a Deaf and Autistic Child Who Uses BSL

Balancing Business and Motherhood: My Journey as a Mum to my Deaf and Autistic son

Running a business is never easy — but doing it while raising my son with additional needs takes it to a whole new level. I wanted to share a bit of my journey, not just to give you a glimpse behind the scenes of Nature’s Scent, but to speak directly to anyone walking a similar path.

Because being a mum, a carer, and a business owner is real. It’s raw. And it’s also one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done.

Our Life in Two Languages: Spoken English and BSL

My beautiful son is both deaf and autistic — an amazing combination of strength, uniqueness and challenge. Our lives have always looked different and from the start, British Sign Language (BSL) became our main way of connecting as a family.

Learning and using BSL opened up a whole new world for all of us. It gave my son the tools to express emotions, needs, and joy — and gave me the privilege of truly understanding him and him me, in every sense of the word.

Communication in our home is visual, expressive and filled with moments of magic as well as chaos. It’s made me a better listener, a more patient parent and an advocate for accessibility in all its forms.

How Nature’s Scent Was Born

Nature’s Scent was never just about wax melts or body care. It was about creating something I could pour my heart into — a peaceful outlet that balanced the demands of caring and gave me a bit of my own identity back.

Late nights blending scents, packing orders in between therapy sessions, hospital appointments and managing everything from home became my new rhythm. Through it all, I found a sense of purpose that reconnected me with who I was before motherhood — and helped me grow into who I am now. A very different version of who I once was.

What Life Really Looks Like Behind the Business

The truth? It's not always easy. Some days, there’s sensory overload or a challenging appointment. Other days, I’m signing to explain emotions, cooking dinner one-handed and still finding time to pack your orders with care.

But my child has taught me what true strength looks like. They've taught me how to see the world differently, to slow down, and to be proud of every step forward — even the tiny ones.

That same love and patience goes into every wax melt, body butter and everything else I create. When you support Nature’s Scent, you’re not just supporting a small business — you’re supporting a family, a cause and a bigger picture which I will hopefully be able to share with you all very soon.

Why I’m Sharing This

If you're a parent, especially one caring for a child with additional needs, I want you to know: you are not alone.

If you're someone who shops with me — now you know a little more about the person behind the brand. This business isn’t powered by a big team. It’s powered by love, late nights, and the quiet determination to build something meaningful.

Final Thoughts

Being a business owner and a mum to a deaf, autistic child is a journey full of challenges — but also full of beauty.

Nature’s Scent is more than just handmade products. It’s a story of resilience, creativity, and connection. Thank you for being part of that story.

With love,

Felicia
